Bitcoin and Other Crypto Currencies Can Now Be Used to Charge E-Money

・Available for shopping at businesses offering Rakuten Pay or Rakuten Point Card payment; In a first for Japan, charging will not be subject to handling fees

Tokyo, February 24, 2021 – The Rakuten Group companies Rakuten Payment, Inc. and crypto asset (virtual currency) exchange business operator Rakuten Wallet, Inc. announced that starting today, users will be able to charge their Rakuten Cash*1 balance, an online e-currency provided by the Rakuten Group, with Bitcoin and other crypto assets*2. By doing so, the user will essentially be able to use crypto assets to shop at Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Point Card-affiliated businesses across Japan. This marks the first time a service in Japan enables users to use crypto assets as a source of e-money payment*3, without charging handling fees.

To date, crypto assets supported by Rakuten Wallet could be withdrawn or accessed via bank accounts by paying a fixed handling fee of 300 yen (including tax) after each spot sales trade or transaction. However, with this new and convenient service, users are now able to charge their Rakuten Cash balance using crypto assets without having to pay any handling fees through the Rakuten Wallet app. Rakuten Cash can be used for purchases made on Rakuten Ichiba and other Rakuten Group services, as well as for payments made at supermarkets, convenience stores and drug stores located across Japan via the Rakuten Pay or Rakuten Point Card apps*4. In addition, when Rakuten Cash is used in conjunction with the Rakuten Pay app, users will receive one Rakuten Point, the number one loyalty points program in Japan in overall customer satisfaction*5, for every 100 yen spent (including tax), providing crypto assets users more value.

This service supports Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), all of which can be used with Rakuten Wallet’s spot trading services. The amount of Rakuten Cash chargeable using crypto assets ranges from a minimum of 1,000 yen to a maximum cumulative total of 100,000 yen per month. The user’s Rakuten Cash account balance will be automatically updated after charging*6. Furthermore, coming this spring, the Rakuten Wallet app will be conveniently accessible from the Rakuten Pay app, allowing users to more easily charge Rakuten Cash using crypto assets*7.

To commemorate the launch of this service, Rakuten will hold the “Receive up to 1,000 Points for Charging Rakuten Cash with Crypto Assets” campaign from February 24 to March 24, 2021. During this campaign, if customers charge their Rakuten Cash balance from their spot trading account on the Rakuten Wallet app, they will receive Rakuten Points in accordance with the amount charged.
