WHO WE ARE

Rakuten was founded in 1997, in an era when everyone was still saying “people don't buy things on the internet.” The company was born out of a desire to support small and medium-sized companies by empowering them to expand their businesses nationwide. Our first business, Rakuten Ichiba, launched with only 6 employees, 1 server and 13 participating stores.

Our mission to empower people and society through innovation continues to drive us. Rakuten is committed to making the world a better place through innovative ideas and thinking outside the box.

BUSINESS MODEL
Rakuten Ecosystem

Establishing our own ecosystem through a diverse portfolio of services centered on membership

Rakuten provides more than 70 services across a wide range of fields, including the following: internet services, such as e-commerce, travel, and digital content; fintech services, such as credit cards, banking, securities, e-money, and cashless payments; mobile services, such as providing a mobile carrier service; and professional sports. By seamlessly linking these services through Rakuten membership, we have formed a truly unique “Rakuten Ecosystem.”

With a single ID, Rakuten members can use multiple services across the Rakuten Ecosystem, as well as earn and spend Rakuten Points when shopping and using various Rakuten services. By providing highly convenient services that cover the gamut of daily life, we encourage customers to dive deeper into the ecosystem, use multiple Group services, and continue to make use of our services. This approach creates synergy that minimizes customer acquisition costs, maximizes lifetime value per member, and increases the total gross transaction volume for all Rakuten Group service involved, giving Rakuten an irreplaceable competitive edge.

Currently, Rakuten has more than 100 million members* in Japan. We will continue to expand the Rakuten Ecosystem on a global scale to provide entertaining and convenient services to more than 1.5 billion Rakuten members worldwide.
