Rakuten Books to Begin Accepting Orders
for Products by Phone, Fax and Postcard
from September

- Online bookstore BOOKSERVICE’s operations to be merged with Rakuten Books
to enhance user convenience -

Tokyo, June 30, 2016 – Rakuten, Inc. today announced that from September 28, 2016, it will begin accepting orders for books, CDs, DVDs and other products sold at its online bookstore, Rakuten Books by phone, fax and postcard.

On the same day, online bookstore BOOKSERVICE CO., which became a subsidiary of Rakuten in April 2015, will integrate the digital (online book sales) and analog (book orders via phone and similar channels) operations of its business into Rakuten Books. Rakuten Books will also begin receiving orders, delivery and payment for books, magazines, comics and other items that are currently carried out by Bookservice.

This means that users will not only be able to continue to purchase books sold by BOOKSERVICE from Rakuten Books’ website, but they will also be able to conveniently place orders for CDs, DVDs, games and other items sold by Rakuten Books via phone, fax or postcard, all without accessing the internet*1, *2. Since Rakuten Books’ system will be used to ship products that have been ordered by phone etc., 

Rakuten Books, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, has been striving to develop and improve its various services to enhance the convenience for a wide range of users. By accepting orders via phone, fax or postcard, it will be able to offer new channels for an even larger number of users to easily buy books and other items, and contribute to the development of the publishing and entertainment industries.


*1 The “BOOKSERVICE” name will be retained as the point of contact for placing orders, and users will be able to continue to use the current phone and fax numbers for orders on BOOKSERVICE. Only the postcard mailing address is scheduled to change.

*2 Orders placed by phone, fax or postcard can only be paid for using a payment-on-delivery method when the goods arrive. A 305 yen (including tax) payment-on-delivery fee will also be applied, separate to the cost of the item purchased. Rakuten Super Points cannot be used to pay the fee, and the fee does not earn points. When orders are placed by phone, if the value of the order is less than 1,500 yen, a separate 300 yen phone order fee (including tax) will be additionally applied.
