Rakuten Launches New Membership Program “Rakuten Young”

Tokyo, December 22, 2014 - Rakuten, Inc. today announced the official launch of Rakuten Young, a new membership program aimed at young people in Japan which provides an opportunity for them to experience the Rakuten Ecosystem while enjoying a wide range of unique benefits aimed at supporting their key needs in shopping, finance, travel, education and entertainment.

Rakuten Young is an extension of the Rakuten Membership ID, designed exclusively for young adults, aged 18 to 24, and students of all ages in higher education*1. By joining the program, members will receive a variety of exclusive benefits that allow them to save money while enjoying the fun and convenience of the various services Rakuten has to offer. Rakuten Young offers a commitment-free 3-month trial, after which members can enjoy the benefits of the program for an annual fee of only 1,780 yen (tax included)*2.

The following is an outline of the specific benefits available exclusively to Rakuten Young members:

・Rakuten Ichiba - Free shipping coupons that can be used at stores participating in the program*3,*4, in addition to access to exclusive promotions only available to Rakuten Young members.

・Rakuten Travel - Earn 2 Rakuten Super Points for every 100 yen spent on reservations and use of hotels and highway buses within Japan booked through Rakuten Travel*5.

・Rakuten Books - Earn 10 Rakuten Super Points for every 100 yen spent on purchases of books, manga, magazines, CDs, DVDs, games, software and other products on Rakuten Books for their first year of full membership*5*6.

・Rakuten Kobo - Members will receive a 500 yen discount coupon when joining the program and earn 10 Rakuten Super Points for every 100 yen spent on purchases of eBooks*5*7.

・Rakuten Card – When applying for the Rakuten Young program, members who also apply for and receive a new Rakuten Card will receive 1-year free Rakuten Young membership and are eligible for a 2,000 Rakuten Super Points gift.

Through this new membership program, Rakuten hopes to increase its touch points with customers and introduce new audiences to the diverse services the company offers, while supporting the needs of its young members in many aspects of their daily lives.

*2. After the 3-month trial period, the user’s membership will be automatically upgraded to full membership and they will be charged the annual fee of 1,780 yen (tax included) for the service unless they withdraw from the program before the end of the 3–month trial period.

Members can receive additional Rakuten Super Points for purchases up to a total of 6,000 yen during the 3-month free trial, and up to a total of 30,000 yen during the first year of full membership. For purchases over these limits and purchases made from the second year of full membership, members will receive the standard 1 Rakuten Super Point for every 100 yen spent on purchases at Rakuten Books.
