Rakuten to Provide Free Cancer insurance to Rakuten Members

- Rakuten to shoulder full premium, and provide a 50,000 yen lump-sum
in case of cancer diagnosis -

October 31, 2014 – Rakuten, Inc. today announced that as part of its membership loyalty program, it will provide the “Rakuten Mini-Insurance Cancer Plan” developed by group firm Rakuten Life Insurance Co., Ltd. to eligible Rakuten members, starting on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

Eligible Rakuten members can sign up to the Rakuten Mini-Insurance Cancer Plan, and can receive a “cancer diagnosis benefit” of 50,000 yen as a lump-sum benefit in the case that they are diagnosed with cancer (malignant neoplasm). The insurance is for one year, and the premium is fully paid by Rakuten as the policyholder. Utilizing Rakuten’s unique business model that includes financial services, this initiative will boost customer satisfaction.

The Rakuten Mini-Insurance Cancer Plan is fixed-term one year cancer insurance, underwritten by Rakuten Life Insurance Co., Ltd.

Date of service launch: Tuesday, November 4, 2014

Nature of plan

*1 The exemption period is for 90 days following the day of entry into contract. Coverage begins on 91st day.
*2  Intraepithelial neoplasia is not covered.

The plan will first be offered to Gold members and above (including Diamond and Platinum members), with Rakuten Cards*3. The offer is planned to be progressively broadened in the future. Eligibility is restricted by age (to those aged 20 to 69) and to those without any history of cancer.
