Rakuten Global Market, a subdivision of Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten, Inc. (HQ: Tokyo-to, Shinagawa-ku, CEO Mikitani Hiroshi) will add Alipay (www.alipay.com), China’s leading online payment service, to its checkout on April 17th 2014. The tie-up between Rakuten and Alipay enables Chinese consumers to use Alipay’s secure and convenient payment system for their shopping on Rakuten Global Market, and marks the beginning of a partnership which aims to further enhance the user experience.
Launched in December 2004 and operating as a related company of Alibaba Group, Alipay provides an easy and secure way for individuals and businesses to make and receive payments online and on mobile phones. Alipay is the payment solution supporting the online and mobile versions of Taobao Marketplace and Tmall.com, and is used by leading online merchants in the retail, digital entertainment, telecoms and travel industries. Consumers also use Alipay for daily activities such as paying restaurant, utility, healthcare and credit card bills. Alipay also offers an online payment solution to help retailers in North America and Europe sell directly to consumers in China and supports transactions in 14 major foreign currencies.
The move will allow Chinese users who previously did not have international payment methods to purchase items on Rakuten Global Market. The release will start with roughly 250 shops that currently sell on Rakuten Global Market with plans for expansion to all shops that allow shipment to China. The release will be marked by a 10x Rakuten Superpoints Launch campaign that will allow users to collect Rakuten superpoints worth 10% of the purchase value (1 Rakuten Super Point = 1 Japanese Yen).
Started in 2008, Rakuten Global Market is a Rakuten Ichiba’s cross border trading service. Rakuten is a B2B2C marketplace where individual shops sell their wares to users. Out of Rakuten Ichiba’s roughly 42,000 shops, 10,000 shops currently sell to over 200 countries through Rakuten Global Market. Items sold on Rakuten Global Market are of the same price and quality as those available in Japan. Sales to overseas markets, including China, have been growing rapidly and the release of Alipay will allow even more users to purchase on Rakuten Global Market.
