What are your current responsibilities?
As a site reliability engineer for Rakuten Travel, my primary responsibility is to enhance development efficiency and ensure service availability. To achieve this, I provide engineers with essential tools such as log analysis platforms, monitoring platforms, and continuous integration/continuous delivery platforms. Additionally, I conduct performance analysis on Rakuten Super Sale and implement measures to address load-related issues, contributing to the overall improvement of service availability.

What do you find satisfying and interesting about your work?
Rakuten Travel caters to a large number of users, resulting in heavy site traffic and high access numbers. That situation provides me with opportunities to tackle technically challenging tasks, which I find highly satisfying. One particular project that exemplifies this involved improving the performance of our log analysis platform. To ensure the timely submission of a vast volume of logs generated by web servers and applications to the analysis platform without any defects or omissions, it was necessary to reconfigure the system’s capacity and architecture. This process included tasks such as code reading, introducing monitoring tools, conducting load tests, and internally investigating open-source software implementation. I believe the opportunity for engineers to work with a wide range of technologies is a unique aspect of Rakuten Group. Many Rakuten engineers are highly ambitious and proactively contribute to open-source software, participate in internal technical book discussion clubs, and engage in programming competitions. It is both enjoyable and inspiring for me to work in an environment where I can focus on tackling technological issues while polishing my skills through friendly rivalry with like-minded colleagues.
Where do you feel you have improved since joining Rakuten?
Engaging in project management and assuming project leadership roles, not only have I honed my technical skills but also significantly refined my managerial skills. Rakuten provides an environment that fosters personal development for engineers in both technical and managerial areas. I have proactively proposed and led major projects, gaining invaluable experience in leadership roles with a degree of discretionary authority. To ensure project success, it is essential to collaborate with team members and various stakeholders on tasks such as crafting project proposals, developing roadmaps, managing progress, reporting progress, task allocation, and estimating workloads. I was able to move the projects forward through the support and feedback from managers and others. Leading projects at such an early stage in my career has proven to be of tremendous value for a young engineer like myself.
Message to students
Rakuten offers services with exceptionally high traffic and access numbers, presenting opportunities to engage in technically challenging tasks. I find this environment personally satisfying, as it allows for continuous learning across a broad spectrum of subjects and the constant challenge of pushing one's limits, all while receiving valuable support and feedback. I did not expect to be working on such a diverse range of technologies immediately after joining the company, but this is one of the unique appeals of supporting Rakuten’s services. It is an ideal workplace for individuals aspiring to develop their technical skills.

- On-premise log analysis platform implementation.

- Lunch at the company cafeteria. There are many options, and all are delicious.
- 13:00
- Check the progress of team members and review deliverables. During reviews, I take detailed notes about the points people raise and their reasons.
- 14:30
- 1-on-1 meeting with my supervisor. I discuss career-related matters and provide my supervisor with updates.
- 15:00
- Continuous integration or delivery platform building and pipeline implementation. I work on this in close communication with all other personnel involved.
- 17:30
- Finish work.
