Current Role
I'm an automation test engineer at Rakuten Travel. We use test code to check if the current service is working normally. We monitor it every day and if something goes wrong, we collaborate with development engineers to solve any online issues and ensure everything is stable. Before the release of each project, we conduct automation testing to help manual test engineers confirm that the newly launched functions have no impact on the existing functions. Similarly, during big campaigns, such as Super Sale, we run our automation test code to check whether the online environment has any abnormalities or issues. At the same time, we are constantly expanding our test code to widen the scope of automated testing and to support more conditions and services.
How do you feel you have grown since joining Rakuten?
Rakuten is a big, international company and has a big platform, with many services and businesses spread all over the world. Rakuten’s projects, and therefore my work, can affect a lot of people. I have friends who have taken part in Super Sale and the National Travel Support Campaign, for example. I think that by working on these projects, I can help people have better travel experiences, which makes me feel a strong sense of accomplishment and that my work is very meaningful. Every time I work on the Super Sale release monitoring, I deeply feel that I am contributing my abilities as a member of society. That was especially the case for the September 2022 Super Sale, when I was the main person in charge of automation test monitoring. In addition, I also recently contributed to the National Travel Support Campaign. All these experiences make me feel like I have grown.
What would you tell someone considering joining Rakuten?
Rakuten is a large company with an international work environment that embraces cultural diversity. Employees come from many different countries, so internal communication is in English and Japanese. We also have various international partners, so there are opportunities to work with people from all over the world. Rakuten has many services and a huge market share, giving it the reach to impact many people. You can surely find something that matches your interests and values here, and feel a sense of responsibility and achievement in your work. There are also opportunities to grow quickly, even if you are inexperienced. Rakuten supports new graduates with training and gives newcomers lots of opportunities to take on challenges and find the right career direction for them. It also offers job transfer opportunities within the company if you decide you want to try a different career path.
What is your daily workflow like?
Generally, I check my emails in the morning and get ready for my daily tasks. I also have my first daily huddle meeting, where we will report on the day’s tasks and share any other updates. Afterwards, if there is a test task that day, the test will be completed first. Then, I will start to focus on code implementation. Usually, I will do the most difficult work in the morning. After 12:00, I go to the company cafeteria for my lunch break and enjoy a delicious free lunch. In the afternoon, there are sometimes project meetings, study sessions or training. If not, I always focus on coding again. I also have my second daily huddle meeting, where we discuss the progress of the day's tasks and arrange tasks for the next day. Afterwards, I tend to continue writing code and then check my emails later.
