Cloud Services Department
Cloud Platform Supervisory Department
What are your current responsibilities?
My department is responsible for providing servers to various internal companies and supporting the operations of over 70 services compris the Rakuten Ecosystem. Linking these diverse services through a common membership and loyalty program, Rakuten has created one of the world’s most unique and robust ecosystems. As a system infrastructure engineer, my primary role in the team is to develop programs to automate server monitoring and configuration. My main goal is to provide more reliable servers to ensure customers have stable access to Rakuten’s services. My role entails standardizing specifications for new and existing programs and redesigning them to increase serviceability. I also handle the construction of new servers to accommodate the launch of new services or expanding customer numbers.
What do you find satisfying and interesting about your work?
I was engaged in a project to develop infrastructure to underpin Rakuten Mobile’s 5G telecommunications services as a server designer and developer. Through this experience, I had the chance to collaborate with many people inside and outside the company to overcome challenges, leading to my professional growth. While customers may not be aware of the servers we develop, I find satisfaction in knowing that many of them utilize these servers when using Rakuten’s services. Another appealing aspect of working at Rakuten is that they incorporate a startup culture, allowing individuals to challenge themselves to a variety of projects regardless of their length of service at Rakuten. In addition, multiple engineers from different countries work at Rakuten, allowing me to learn about their cultures.
What do you keep in mind in the course of your daily work?
When I participated in a project that included various people from both within and outside the company, there were diverse perspectives and opinions on some issues, leading to occasional challenges in negotiations. Through this experience, I learned that it is essential to understand the perspectives of all parties for smooth negotiation. By actively taking into account the viewpoints and outlooks of others while expressing our own opinions, I could propose compelling solutions accepted by everyone involved, leading to a successful outcome in the negotiations. Adopting this approach ensured that the project progressed smoothly without any issues, and my team achieved a positive result. I now apply this experience to help my team reach its goals effectively by considering the perspectives of my colleagues when communicating with them.
What does your typical workday look like?
After arriving at the office, I check my emails and tasks for the day first thing in the morning. I sometimes adjust my arrival time using the flextime system. Since one of our team members is in India, I consider the time difference and schedule my messages to be sent to them later in the day. I then have a one-on-one meeting with my colleague to discuss new technologies, address existing issues, and brainstorm ideas for new programs and solutions. In the afternoon, I have team meetings with the members in India to confirm each member’s schedule and progress. After finishing work, I enjoy playing with my dog at home and then taking a bath to freshen up.
