What are your current responsibilities?
I am currently working as an application engineer in the Open Service and Production Department. My responsibilities include designing and developing efficient systems, reviewing code, testing and managing the release of our products. The services developed in this department are used to purchase lottery tickets online, but we also work to maintain stable operations, conduct research and improve existing functions for other services.
Having joined immediately after graduating from university, I have been an engineer at Rakuten for a year and a half now. I received 4 months of on-the-job training after being assigned to my current department, and in addition to what I learned at university, I have acquired many new techniques and development methods used in the company.
What do you find challenging and exciting about your job?
Personally, I think the most interesting part of being an application engineer is writing code. I also feel a definite sense of satisfaction when I find the most effective solution to a problem.
Last year, I worked on a new project related to a campaign. Within a very tight schedule, and after repeated discussions with the producer, we finally came up with the best design method. Our main goal is to create a superb user experience, not only to make the project itself a success, but also to provide an experience that is valuable to the user. Whenever we achieve that goal, the feeling of accomplishment is simply the best.
Why did you join Rakuten?
I feel energized when I come to work every day because there’s always something thrilling going on at Rakuten, whether it pertains to work or relationships among my colleagues. Being able to work with great people is a big reason why I like working at Rakuten. I have a great working relationship with my teammates, all of whom respect each other, build various tools together, and check each other’s coding. We’re close enough with each other that we can comfortably joke around. I think Rakuten is the best place for me to work not only because of my wonderful colleagues, but also because of the facilities, such as the fitness club and cafeteria, which effectively help raise everyone’s motivation to work hard.
What does your typical workday look like?
I’ll have breakfast in the cafeteria after I arrive at the office, usually starting work with a meeting at 9:00 am. Other than checking progress with my teammates, we also exchange information frequently. I usually spend lunchtime with my colleagues, but on some days I might join a lunch meeting with my boss. When my afternoon work is done, I go to the fitness club in the evening to exercise. Before I leave work, I make sure to reply to all the emails I received that day. After finishing up any remaining work, I go home with a refreshed mind.
