What are your current responsibilities?
I joined Rakuten as an application engineer in the backend development group of the Rakuten Point Card department. As I pursued my career, I became eager to challenge myself to acquire skills in a different technology stack, so I applied for a transfer. I now work as a data engineer for Rakuten Point Card in the development team, and my responsibilities include the development of the data analysis platform and business intelligence tool for the service. My role is to analyze purchase data based on points held by Rakuten Point Card affiliated stores and generate reports according to the results. I'm also involved in compiling data verification reports to enhance the functionality of analysis reporting for affiliated stores. My goal is to optimize the process by visualizing product sales data and customer attribute distribution. By analyzing consumer behavior, I contribute to the decision-making process of affiliated stores.
What would you tell someone considering joining Rakuten?
I’m highly satisfied with Rakuten’s working environment which has a diverse workforce consisting of employees from various countries and backgrounds. The company is home to numerous talented engineers, and interacting with them has allowed me to acquire valuable technical knowledge. The practice of sharing technical information is widespread among team members, fostering an environment where we can inspire and learn from one another. Rakuten’s system and environment allow for freedom of individual working styles, creating workplaces that are not only physically but also mentally comfortable. There is a flexible dress code, allowing employees to wear what they prefer. I appreciate the freedom to work in apparel that suits my needs. The high level of diversity contributes to vibrant communication, cultivating an ideal setting for employees to showcase their strengths to the fullest.
Where do you feel you have improved since joining Rakuten?
I’m currently involved in providing technical support for Rakuten Ichiba stores from service development standpoint. I had already been a user of the service prior to joining Rakuten, which allowed me to gain a user's perspective. Moreover, by leveraging my operational experience, I believe I can now develop functions from a fresh angle. In addition, when generating reports for stores, optimizing the filtering function of analysis reports played a crucial role in significantly reducing the data upload time for report creation. We also achieved a substantial workload reduction by migrating Rakuten Point Card customer support tools to our in-house cloud environment and automating them. While I began practical research during my student days, working on business-level systems has exposed me to large-scale operations, contributing to the growth of my logical thinking capabilities and understanding across various domains.
What was a moment when you felt empowered through your work?
While working as an application engineer in the backend development group, I took on the responsibility of migrating internal tools. Through the enhancement of the system architecture, this initiative proved successful in reducing costs related to updates and maintenance. Right after joining Rakuten, I gained firsthand knowledge of cloud computing technology. Not only did I have the opportunity to apply this knowledge, but I also succeeded in utilizing it to enhance the internal development environment. I'm extremely pleased with these accomplishments.
