What are your current responsibilities?

I work in the Corporate Accounting Department, mainly in charge of accounting and bookkeeping for Rakuten Points. Since many divisions and subsidiaries of Rakuten Group are tied to Rakuten Points, I collaborate with various people across business fields and organizations daily to process the monthly accounting. In addition to these regular tasks, due to the sheer volume of numbers handled by Rakuten Points, I check for abnormal values and strive to improve business operations while also sharing information with relevant teams. Since Rakuten Points are tied to each business, my role gives me an excellent opportunity to become familiar with how our various businesses operate and understand the overall business development of Rakuten Group.

What do you find challenging and exciting about your job?

I believe that business and accounting are two sides of the same coin – they are inseparable. Working in accounting means I also learn about business trends too which is very exciting. Also, one of the interesting things about working with Rakuten Points is that I get to learn what services each business offers and how points are awarded. Through my role, I have learned a lot about the various Rakuten Group businesses and started making use of these services personally as well. My job requires a great deal of responsibility and accountability, as it deals with the company’s finances. People in various positions ask me for advice and depend on me, so I feel a great sense of satisfaction whenever I can help them.

Why did you join Rakuten?

Rakuten Group has a wide variety of businesses and a corporate culture that allows each employee to take on new challenges whenever they want. This is a major reason why I work for the Rakuten Group. Whenever we launch a new businesses, we consult with the related parties about the accounting process. In these situations, our expertise as an accounting department is often sought out. Rakuten Group’s working environment allows me to take on challenges and I feel that I am steadily growing through my work, utilizing the accounting knowledge I have built up. I play a part providing services and solutions to Rakuten Group's wide range of businesses and organizations while enhancing my expertise and knowledge in the accounting profession.

Where do you feel you have improved since joining Rakuten?

Before moving to the current Corporate Accounting Department, I oversaw sales accounting for businesses in the Commerce Accounting Department. In this department, which assists in the operation and growth of each business on the accounting side, I had many opportunities to explain the accounting process to people in non-accounting departments. After much trial and error on my part in trying to help them understand, my explanations of accounting processes gradually became easier to understand. This was a very valuable experience for me because it helped me to think carefully about how to communicate with people from different fields and put those ideas into practice. I also learned the difficulty and importance of explaining to others information that is outside their area of expertise. That experience has been put to good use in my current role in the Corporate Accounting Department, where I receive a variety of consultations and questions.

Arrive at the office, check email, prioritize the day's schedule and begin work.

Accounting work. Receive figures to be recorded, check for any abnormal values and flag irregularities.

Lunch time. I really like the cafeteria, which is free and has a wide variety of food options.

Regular team meeting. Share issues with each other. It is a productive time during which we give each other advice.

Business improvement meeting. Identify and discuss possible improvements in monthly accounting operations.
17:00
Review operational flow so that suggested improvements made at the meeting can be addressed the following month or later.
18:00
After leaving the office, I have dinner with friends or study accounting. On my days off, I really enjoy going out for meals and meeting friends from across different industries, which rejuvenates me for the upcoming week.
