Rakuten Mobile

Merchant Developer / Vice Department Manager
Planning & Promotion Division
Rakuten Mobile

What are your current responsibilities?

I am tasked with assessing potential locations for new mobile base stations, a critical role in enhancing the connectivity of the Rakuten Mobile network. I also manage recalibration operations for existing base stations, acting on feedback received through survey responses and customer requests for signal improvement. Coordinating with specialized engineers assigned to different regions nationwide, my role involves determining the recalibration needs, schedules and methods for each base station. Given the diverse backgrounds of our engineers, a key aspect of my job is establishing consistent work standards to ensure that they consistently achieve results of the same quality. Notably, as many of the engineers are from overseas, our collaborative efforts are conducted in English, the official language of Rakuten.

What do you find satisfying and interesting about your work?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is the tangible impact I have on enhancing Rakuten Mobile’s services. It is incredibly rewarding to witness improvements in connectivity, especially in places that I’m familiar with, such as installing base stations at popular sightseeing spots and theme parks. When friends mention experiencing strong Rakuten Mobile signals in places where I played a role in installations, it validates the significance of my efforts. Conversely, if I hear about suboptimal connectivity in a certain location, it propels me to promptly work on implementing enhancements. The dynamic nature of my role keeps things interesting, as I get to witness the rapid improvement of Rakuten Mobile’s signal across Japan with each successful milestone in my work.

Why did you join Rakuten?

I joined Rakuten Group because of the wealth of opportunities it presents. When I was job hunting, I did not have a clear vision for my future career. However, Rakuten stood out for its diverse services, creating an environment conducive to tackling a variety of challenges. That’s the primary reason I chose Rakuten Group. Since then, I have navigated a wide range of challenges starting with domestic sales at Rakuten Ichiba, before progressing to international sales. Achieving sales results in English while overseas proved to be a significant yet rewarding challenge. Subsequently, I transferred to Rakuten Mobile, where I am currently engaged in management responsibilities. My time at Rakuten has allowed me to accumulate a broad spectrum of work experience, shaping my professional growth.

What do you keep in mind in terms of your attitude toward daily work?

I am committed to approaching my daily work with conscientious effort, consistently considering the perspectives of others. Past experiences, such as creating a document that didn’t effectively convey my intentions or struggling to understand others’ intentions, have heightened my awareness. These instances have motivated me to consciously focus on how my communication is perceived, striving to ensure clarity and understanding whether interacting face-to-face or in writing.
