Sustainability Promotion Officer / Manager
Sustainability Section
Sustainability Department

What are your current responsibilities?

I’m responsible for communicating with and engaging stakeholders in sustainability issues. Specifically, I handle the creation and management of non-financial information of the sustainability section on the corporate website and production of corporate reports to disclose to investors and shareholders. I also analyze feedback from investors and ESG rating agencies and propose improvements to business units within the company based on the analysis. As part of Rakuten’s commitment to realizing a sustainable society, we provide training on sustainability issues to employees to promote awareness, and I am in charge of selecting important sustainability-related topics for use in e-learning courses.
At Rakuten Group, we provide training on sustainability to employees to make the subject a personal matter for each employee.

How do you feel you have contributed to customers and society through your work?

I aspire to contribute to Rakuten’s mission of “empowering people and society through innovation.” Since Rakuten provides over 70 services across different industries for a wide range of stakeholders, we therefore have the potential to create a positive social impact through collaborating with such stakeholders in, for example, promoting a shift in user behavior towards more sustainable habits. At the Sustainability Department, we run a program called “Dialogue for Change with Rakuten,” which aims to create positive social impact through creating new dialogues about societal issues. I feel that this program embodies our commitment to sustainability as a company and helps create new connections with the community through involving external partners as we make proposals to improve society.

Why did you join Rakuten?

“Empowerment” is part of Rakuten’s mission and we also promote it internally through encouraging bottom-up innovation, which is what makes the company an interesting place for me to work for. Many programs like “Rakuten IT School NEXT,” which guides future generations by providing tech training, and “Rakuten Social Accelerator,” where employees collaborate with external stakeholders and utilize Rakuten’s technologies and assets to tackle social issues, all originated from employees’ bottom-up proposals. Moreover, the diversity of the industries and roles that one can get involved in at Rakuten also appealed to me. I started my career in sales, moved on to a planning role, and now I’m working in the sustainability field. The ability to develop your own career within the company based on personal interests and skills is another appealing aspect of working at Rakuten.

What kind of career path have you followed and what personal growth have you achieved?

When I first joined the company, I worked as an e-commerce consultant supporting Rakuten Ichiba merchants in expanding their sales as a part of the regional empowerment initiative. After that, I worked as a planning specialist and was involved in providing training support for Rakuten Ichiba merchants and was later involved in creating educational content for construction companies engaged in building Rakuten Mobile’s base stations. At the same time, I served as a member of the secretariat for the social impact programs at the Sustainability Department. Through this experience of collaborating with a broad range of groups in these social impact programs, I developed an interest in sustainability issues and in creating positive social impact through leveraging Rakuten’s diverse array of assets in collaboration with stakeholders. So, using Rakuten’s internal open position system, I transferred to my current role in the Sustainability Department.
