Tokyo, May 25, 2020 - Rakuten Payment, Inc. (Rakuten) and East Japan Railway Company (JR East) today announced that the IC card-based transportation e-money Suica service provided by JR East is now available for use in the smartphone-based payment app Rakuten Pay.
Starting today, customers are now able to issue a new Suica or charge*1 an existing one inside the Rakuten Pay app, as well as make payments*2 at approximately 5,000 train stations and on approximately 50,000 buses, in addition to approximately 940,000 stores*3 across Japan through Suica. As an additional benefit, customers are also able to earn one Rakuten Point for every 200 yen used to charge their Suica inside the Rakuten Pay app when they select Rakuten Card, the credit card provided by the Rakuten Group, as the source of payment.
Plans to further improve the service are underway with an upcoming feature that allows customers to charge their Suica using Rakuten Points.
The Rakuten Pay Suica service is available on AndroidTM devices that support the Osaifu-Keitai® function*4. Starting today, iOS device users are able to earn one Rakuten Point for every 200 yen used to charge their Suica when paying with Rakuten Card via the Mobile Suica app or Apple Pay*5 by entering the campaign accessible through the link inside the Rakuten Pay app*6.
Going forward, Rakuten and JR East will seek to provide further updates and new features in order to deliver added value and greater levels of convenience to customers.
*1 The charge function is available for Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express-branded Rakuten Cards.
