Rakuten and FamilyMart Conclude Basic Agreement to Introduce Smartphone App Payment Service “Rakuten Pay” to FamilyMart Stores

Rakuten Pay to be gradually introduced to FamilyMart stores from November, and available in all stores nationwide starting December 4

Tokyo, October 18, 2018 - Rakuten, Inc. and FamilyMart Co., Ltd. today announced that the two companies have concluded a basic agreement regarding the introduction of “Rakuten Pay,” Rakuten’s smartphone app payment service, to FamilyMart convenience stores nationwide. Based on the agreement, the service will be gradually introduced to stores from November, and customers will be able to make payments via barcodes through their smartphones at all 16,715 FamilyMart stores*1 nationwide from December 4.

Rakuten Pay is a payment service that allows users to make quick and easy payments via a smartphone app by registering a credit card to their account. When making purchases at FamilyMart stores across Japan, users can pay by presenting the barcode displayed on their Rakuten Pay app to the cashier on check-out. Through the app, users can also earn and use Rakuten Super Points, which have been rated number one for overall user satisfaction among points programs*2, when making payments. Additionally, by registering their Rakuten Card as their default credit card for payments, users can also earn points for using the Rakuten Pay app (1 point for every 200 yen spent) and Rakuten Card (1 point for every 100 yen spent)*3.

FamilyMart introduced the Rakuten Group’s e-money system “Rakuten Edy” at all its stores in July 2007. By offering a wider variety of payment methods, including the Rakuten Pay service, the company aims to further enhance convenience for its customers.

Going forward, Rakuten aims to expand the number of locations where Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Super Points can be used in order to give users the opportunity to experience the convenience of cashless payments and improve its services.
