Rakuten Solar Begins Marketing
Lithium Ion Battery Storage

Offers new energy solutions with battery storage

TOKYO, April 3, 2013 – Rakuten Inc. (JASDAQ: 4755) announced today that it began sales of Kyocera’s Lithium Ion Battery Storage Unit through Rakuten Solar. The battery storage will be sold as a set with a Kyocera solar power generating system.

Interest among Japanese households in energy conservation and renewable, green energy generation continues to grow as a way of preparing for power cuts due to natural disasters among other factors. A lithium ion battery power storage system is set to supply electricity automatically in the case of a power cut, providing a continuous flow as needed. The system can also reduce household power bills by storing less expensive nighttime electricity for use in the daytime. This is a new solution for households unable to install a solar power generation system on their roof due to size or shape issues. Furthermore, when combined with a solar power generation system, this comprehensive system enables the household to sell more electricity during the day.

Since February 1, 2013 a government subsidy1 has made installation of battery storage and solar power systems easier, even for those using financing. From April 3, as part of a promotion to mark the start of sales of the lithium ion battery power storage system by Rakuten Solar, customers installing the system can earn up to 50,000 Rakuten Super Points.

Since the company launched its service last July, Rakuten Solar has been making it easier for households to install solar power systems with various post-installation service offerings such as the Rakuten Solar Home Warranty2 indemnity service and the members-only Taiyo Mileage Club3 through which generated solar power can be exchanged for various perks. Rakuten Solar intends to offer more new solutions and services in the future to households, in order to boost the adoption of solar power generation and battery storage systems.

1.Subsidy may not apply under certain conditions. Subsidy may be granted after installation in the case of a significant amount.
