At 9:26 pm JST on April 14, 2016, a large-scale earthquake struck the Kumamoto region in Kumamoto Prefecture of Japan. Vital utilities and infrastructure such as electricity, gas, water, and transportation systems over a wide area were damaged.
Rakuten received a lot of messages from Rakuten Ichiba merchants soon after the earthquake, offering to donate their products to the disaster area. Many of these merchants had been affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake five years ago, and they came forward to support the disaster area and to express their gratitude for the help they had received by sending their products through Rakuten.
RNN reports on the actions that Rakuten Ichiba merchants and the Area Empowerment Department took immediately after the earthquake, and the efforts of employees at the Rakuten Fulfillment Center in Chiba, who assisted in loading the supplies to be sent to Kumamoto.
