What are your current responsibilities?

At the request of the business departments, we review contracts, check marketing campaigns, respond to legal consultations and provide legal support for new services when they are launched. Among the wide variety of Rakuten Group's services, I mainly support businesses related to sports and digital content. I conduct in-depth interviews with business departments and, when necessary, apply a legal perspective to the situation, discuss solutions, and sometimes consult external lawyers. I often research laws and regulations, government guidelines, books, and other sources on my own to answer the questions. In addition, I maintain manuals and instructions for proper marketing campaign operations, and sometimes speak as a lecturer at in-house legal seminars held by my department.

What do you feel you have contributed to customers and society through your work?

Rakuten Group aims to empower people and society by providing opportunities for many people and giving back to society. Although my work does not directly affect society, I believe it indirectly has a positive impact on the world by supporting each of Rakuten Group's businesses. I use the services I oversee and observe their day-to-day activities, and it makes me happy when I see new functions implemented, new initiatives started and campaigns launched. When a new service I am involved in launching is released, I feel a great sense of accomplishment together with members of the business departments. In line with Rakuten Group's one team culture, we are united across business departments to promote our projects together.

What do you find challenging and exciting about your job?

There is not always a single correct answer in legal work, nor in the intellectual property work I have handled in the past. In this job, one must consider both the legal theory of how things should be and the circumstances that each business faces to decide what is the best choice in any given situation. Even if issues are legally similar, answers will differ depending on the situation, and there is no set answer that will work every time. Although it sometimes feels difficult, I know I am working to support the Rakuten Group from the aspect of risk management as it continues to further expand its businesses. The most rewarding part of my job is that I am able to consider business-specific situations precisely because I am continuously involved in business aspects within the company.

What has your career path been like, and how have you grown?

After joining the company, I worked in the Intellectual Property Department for four years and then transferred to the Legal and Compliance Department, where I have been for the last two and a half years. I have a particularly strong interest in copyright law, and I was actively involved in copyright-related consultations in the Intellectual Property Department. Unlike the Legal Department, the Intellectual Property Department basically did not review contracts, etc., but had many opportunities to examine the nature of the rights themselves in depth, such as determining whether or not intellectual property rights were infringed. I was transferred to the Legal Department at my own request, because I wanted to make use of my knowledge of intellectual property rights and be engaged in a field where intellectual property figures into business transactions and where I can handle contracts related to them. Currently, I am providing contract support for sports and digital content-related matters, which are closely related to intellectual property rights, including copyrights. As a result, I have been able to make the most of my previous experience in my current job.

SCHEDULE

08:30
Arrive at the office and handle tasks like contract reviews that were put on my to-do list the day before. This is the time when I can concentrate the most.
10:00
Check emails and my schedule. Review priorities for today's tasks and use time outside of meetings to complete them.
11:30
Lunch time. I often eat leisurely by myself, but sometimes I invite colleagues to join me.
13:00
Hear consultation matters from the business departments and identify legal issues.
14:00
Regular team meeting. Have discussions when I cannot conclude on a case that I oversee. This is the time good solutions usually come to mind.
16:00
Finish up the day's tasks at a time when there aren’t many meetings. Respond to messages, remaining queries and other matters.
17:30
List tasks for the next morning and leave the office. On days off, I spend time relaxing at home. I sometimes go to the movies by myself to get away from my usual daily routine and refresh myself.
