What are your current responsibilities?

Rakuten Insight is a business that provides next-generation internet research and “plan-do-check-act” (PDCA) support for effective digital marketing. We help our clients solve their challenges using marketing solutions that leverage Rakuten Insight and Rakuten Group’s data resources. Recently, we provide a lot of digital marketing support using consumer behavior analysis data. I meet with clients to understand their needs and then propose the best solutions for them. As team manager, I manage my team members in the planning and implementation of sales strategies.

What do you find challenging and exciting about your job?

With the world becoming more digitalized, the growing digital marketing needs of our clients are becoming more apparent. Rakuten Insight focuses on digital marketing support that leverages Rakuten Group's data assets to build a wide range of solutions, including analyzing consumers’ online behavior and measuring the effectiveness of digital advertising. Our unique selling point is access to the Rakuten Ecosystem’s data. Providing analysis that incorporates this multifaceted data is one of our major strengths. Every day I find it rewarding to be able to help clients solve their challenges by utilizing solutions that leverage these diverse data assets.

What do you try to keep in mind when approaching your work on a daily basis?

How you start off is often what’s most important in work. Take a soccer referee, for example. They can blow a whistle and stop the match if a player makes a dangerous foul. It is up to the referee to decide what constitutes a foul, and the first foul called becomes the standard for that match. If this standard is too strict, the match will get stopped many times; if it is too lenient, the match may become too rough. With work, I believe that the quality of the initial business meeting with a client determines the quality of subsequent meetings and the level of their expectations. Not everything is decided at the beginning, of course, but I always try to prepare carefully for the first meeting with a new business client or the start of a new project.

How are you using your experience in your current role?

I graduated from a university abroad and although I communicate with customers in Japanese mostly, I also have opportunities to make use of my English skills. When non-Japanese clients from foreign companies are present at a business meeting, for example, I introduce Rakuten Insight’s services in English. In addition, many Rakuten Insight Global employees are not from Japan, so I often hear colleagues nearby holding meetings in English. This makes me realize just how global Rakuten Group really is. It’s this working environment that is a unique attraction of Rakuten – talented individuals from around the world can work and grow together side by side through mutual encouragement and friendly competition.
