What are your current responsibilities?
I currently work on promoting the Rakuten Link app to Rakuten Mobile users. While app marketing typically aims to promote downloads, the Rakuten Link app is already downloaded to devices which are sold at Rakuten Mobile stores. Therefore, I facilitate the use of the app to customers, introduce them to various Rakuten services and promote cross-use of these services. Rakuten Link is a “super communication app”, so we plan, execute and analyze the effectiveness of marketing measures on a regular basis, to ensure that as many users as possible are aware of the full variety of functionality. My department serves as a platform for the Rakuten Ecosystem, which includes our partner companies and we handle everything from campaign planning to promotion to scaling the business by increasing the number of users.
What do you find challenging and exciting about your job?
In web marketing, the impact of measures we plan and execute is clearly shown in figures. Marketing can be broadly broken down into two processes: the planning process and the operational process. I believe the reason I find operational work more gratifying is due largely to my experience in my previous sales job, where I could see numbers that reflect my performance every day. It is very rewarding when the number of applications, website traffic, or other web marketing figures get quantifiably and incrementally better. Since this is an important role in attracting new online customers, I try to use my intellectual curiosity and the latest information on a daily basis.
What has your career path been like, and how have you grown?
Prior to my current marketing role, I worked on a wide range of work including sales activities to develop new online stores for Rakuten Ichiba at the Osaka branch office, cross-group marketing and FinTech services. When considering one’s career, it is often said that one should either broaden the scope of work or master one's specialty. In my case, I was able to broaden my career interests and opportunities significantly while I was in my 20s. In every area and department, regardless of whether I liked the work, was good at it, or was interested in it, I explored all types of work with the mindset that I should give everything a try. When things were tough, I would think to myself, “If I can overcome this, I can work in any area or department in the future.” As a result, all of these past experiences have made me who I am today.
Message to students
I think it’s very difficult to find a clear goal for the future during just a few years of school. Many students may feel lost or worried during the job hunting process. For these people, I believe Rakuten Group is an excellent place to work at. It has an environment where employees can challenge themselves and grow and a culture that accepts failure positively as an outcome of taking on challenges. The company has a mission to empower society and everyone plays a role towards that. It’s a working environment where you feel you are helping contribute to a larger social mission in your daily work. I think it’s wonderful to be able to work in this kind of environment where we can realize positive social impact.

- Confirm group's goals for the current term and discuss action plans.

- Lunch time. I eat in the cafeteria and take some time to refresh myself.

- Discuss the direction of ongoing projects, set up promotional distribution.
- 13:00
- Discuss future promotions with Rakuten Mobile’s public relations division.
- 14:00
- Company-wide marketing staff meeting. Consider whether marketing actions taken in other departments can be implemented in my own department.
- 17:00
- Organize the action plan confirmed in the morning. Report meeting on ongoing projects.
- 17:30
- Review the next day's tasks, then leave the office. I sometimes pick up my children from day-care. On days off, I often spend time with my children while doing housework and cleaning.
