Supporting the Solar Bear Fund with Rakuten Edy

Rakuten Edy, Inc., provider of the Edy prepaid rechargeable smart card, features an eco-point program to encourage green living. Consumers who purchase green appliances or build or remodel their home using eco-friendly materials earn points which can be exchanged for a variety of products and services.

Additionally, Rakuten joined NTT Card Solution in donating 0.1% of the proceeds exchanged for eco points to environmental conservation activities implemented by the Solar Bear Fund. The Solar Bear Fund is an NPO working to prevent global warming through activities such as the installation of photovoltaic power generation systems and environmental education programs for children. Through these programs, Edy donations are used to raise awareness of renewable energies and educate children on environmental issues.

Solar Bear Fund Environmental Activities

The Solar Bear Fund is an NPO that works with individual owners or companies like Rakuten Edy, Inc., to prevent global warming by spreading awareness of renewable energies and providing environmental education programs that help ensure a better tomorrow for our children.

Solar Bear Fund Environmental Activities

Solar Bear Power Plant
The Solar Bear Fund is working to promote green solar energy by installing photovoltaic power generation systems at kindergartens and daycare centers in Japan. Additionally, by teaching children hands-on how sunlight can be used to produce energy, we aim to broaden their understanding of renewable energies.
Teaching Global Warming with "The Story of Solar and Bear"
The Solar Bear Fund’s mascots are two brother polar bears named Solar and Bear. The bears used to enjoy a happy life with their mother in the North Pole, but have been separated from her by the melting of the polar ice caps caused by global warming. Children listen to the bears’ story and learn what they can do to help stop global warming and reunite Solar and Bear with their mother.
As more elementary schools address environmental problems in the classroom, the Solar Bear Fund is providing the DVD, “The Story of Solar and Bear,” to schools and educators throughout Japan to help support their efforts.

Using Renewable Energy to Aid Earthquake-stricken Areas
The Great East Japan Earthquake resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and wiped out the infrastructure of hundreds of communities. A particularly serious problem after the earthquake was restoring the electrical supply to quake-stiricken communities. Responding to this need, the Solar Bear Fund dispatched a special truck with a photovoltaic power generation system to disaster-stricken areas and helped provide a power supply for home electronics as well as a recharging station for mobile phones using the power of the sun.
