Rakuten launches “Raboo” e-book store website

- Users can now purchase contents through their web browser -

Rakuten, Inc. (“Rakuten,” Chairman and CEO: Hiroshi Mikitani, Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) launched the website for its e-book store “Raboo” today.

Since “Raboo” opened on August 10th, users have been able to purchase e-book contents only through the compatible device, Panasonic’s “UT-PB1.” However, with the launch of the website, users can now also purchase contents through their web browsers. Contents purchased via both the web browser and the compatible device are stored on the server and managed centrally. Contents can be browsed only on the compatible device.

The “Raboo” website is based on the user interface of the compatible device, with larger versions of the search window and genre buttons for easy viewing. In addition, it periodically provides recommendations for readers, such as features and daily rankings by genre. It also has social functionality through such social networking sites as Twitter and Facebook.

The launch of the website has enhanced convenience for users who own the compatible device, providing them with an additional channel through which they can purchase e-book contents. Additionally, users who do not own the compatible device are now also able to view e-book titles on flash-enabled web browsers through the “Chira Yomi” service to browse electronic contents. The website is thus expected to draw in new groups of users.

In the future, Rakuten aims to contribute to the popularization and expansion of the e-book market in Japan through the provision of a highly convenient e-book store, and by further deepening cooperation with other companies in the e-book industry.
