Retort pouches were first invented by the United States Army Natick R&D Command. While curry was mainly sold in cans or as powder, in midst of fierce competition the Japanese company Otsuka Foods came up with an idea: this American technology could be used to create bags of curry that would be ready to eat simply by warming in hot water. With this innovative idea, Otsuka Foods started developing "a single-portion, foolproof curry meal that will be ready to eat simply by boiling in hot water." In February 1968, Otsuka Foods finally launched the world's first commercialized retort pouch curry: Bon Curry.
