Introduction

Rakuten Group, Inc. operates a diverse range of internet businesses, providing services to numerous customers worldwide. In our activities, we recognize that safeguarding personal information entrusted to us by our customers is one of the most important responsibilities at the core of our operations.

In today’s rapidly digitizing society, handling personal information appropriately is essential for protecting individual rights, ensuring society's trust, and the successful development of economic activities. To overcome those challenging paradigms, Rakuten Group launched a new educational program, "Rakuten Privacy School," in 2024, aiming to raise awareness of privacy throughout society.

Purpose of Rakuten Privacy School

Rakuten Privacy School is an initiative led by Rakuten Group’s Global Privacy Office, in which we visit educational institutions such as junior high schools, high schools, and universities to give lectures to students—the next generation—on the importance of privacy and its practical implementation. The program is designed with the following objectives:

  • 1. Raising Awareness of the Importance of Privacy

    We explain concretely how personal information is collected and used in digital society and the associated risks, fostering the basic knowledge and awareness necessary for students to autonomously manage their own privacy.

  • 2. Introduction to the Profession of “Privacy Specialist”

    We introduce the profession of “Privacy Specialist,” which specializes in privacy, explaining its roles, responsibilities, and career paths. This provides students with an opportunity to consider this profession as a new career option in fields such as information security, law, and IT.

  • 3. Role as a Social Contribution Activity

    By sharing the knowledge and experience Rakuten Group has accumulated over many years regarding privacy, we contribute to the exchange of information and the protection of individual rights in the digital society.

Significance of the Program

Today’s younger generation has grown up using digital devices and the internet from an early age, exchanging a great deal of personal information online. However, opportunities for them to fully understand the value and risks of that information, and how their own data is handled, remain limited.

Rakuten Privacy School aims to address this situation by providing the expertise and practical experience of a corporation to the educational field, empowering students to proactively learn about and practice privacy. We are confident that this will help foster individuals equipped with both ethical awareness and information literacy—qualities essential for success in all areas of society in the future.
