The companies plan to combine cloud and on-device agents to deliver a highly responsive, dependable and private user experience. The desktop version of Rakuten AI will run Rakuten’s efficient, Japanese-optimized LLMs on HP devices, enabling private and sensitive tasks to run locally. This hybrid approach leverages intelligent routing to determine which agent and model to use whether on the cloud, edge or device. Users benefit from seamless continuity offline while minimizing cloud reliance to achieve improved performance and meaningful cost savings.
With Rakuten’s innovative agentic AI, HP Japan customers will gain access to a full spectrum of capabilities1. In addition to general-purpose agents such as summarization, writing and translation, Rakuten offers specialized transactional agents that seamlessly guide users from intent to decision, helping them complete everyday tasks like shopping, booking travel and managing finances.
Rakuten AI acts as a gateway to over 70 Rakuten Ecosystem services and enhances daily life in Japan with language and cultural optimization while fully complying with national privacy and data security laws. Users can leverage Rakuten AI for a seamless, orchestrated experience that boosts productivity, safeguards sensitive data, and empowers creativity-online or offline.
Ting Cai, Rakuten Group Chief AI & Data Officer, stated, “This milestone collaboration with HP, a global technology leader, will empower users with enriching experiences and help to accelerate AI adoption in Japan. By integrating Rakuten AI into HP PCs, we aim to leverage intelligent routing to make powerful agentic AI accessible and useful, enabling seamless human-AI collaboration and a more intuitive user experience that enhances how people work, create and connect.”
“This joint effort demonstrates HP’s commitment to hybrid AI—bringing together powerful on-device AI with cloud-based AI to deliver practical value for customers,” said Nobuki Okado, Managing Director of HP Japan. “Together, we are providing a more secure, cost-efficient and intelligent AI experience. We are excited to deliver intuitive, personalized, agentic capabilities powered by Rakuten AI on HP PCs.”
By combining their respective strengths, Rakuten and HP Japan intend to create new value for customers with AI-powered devices and solutions. This collaboration reflects an important shift in Japan’s PC market toward practical and intelligent agentic AI devices that redefine how people work, create and connect.
From Spring to Summer 2026, the two companies plan to make Rakuten AI available pre-bundled on HP’s consumer and commercial devices in Japan.
