Swirling Dervish Tops

Japanese "Good Toy" Award
After much experimentation this top design was refined to spin easily, creating a beautiful nuances of colour. Spinning red and blue tomahawk faces blur into a gradations of purple. Slowly spin the wind top and a gentle breeze blows, forcefully spin it and create a tornado. Spin the three coloured crescent moons, they lose their colour and become monchromatic. Spin the black and white tomahawk face, subtle colours swirl into an optical illusion. Take a closer look at one of the spinning tops. Blink quickly like the shutter of a camera, watch the colours separate and appear 3 dimensional. Such an innocent glimpse into the mysteries of the brain. Discover the magic of subjective colour from these spinning tops.

At 6 years of age spinning tops is simple.

At 1&1/2 years of age spinning is not yet possible. Lots of frustrated gestures are given for Mama to spin the top.

Favorite tops in a basket! Why not keep them on a table nearby !

In between those busy moments stop and breath, spin a top. Just before serving a cup of tea, spin a top for a friend let them spin their own tops. Lovely moments of top spinning tales.

The pattern and colour of the spinning top are transmuted. This transmutation is referred to as 「Chromatic Adaptation」. According to light and speed, the hues of perceptible colour of the black and white spinning top varies with every individual, this is referred to as 「Subjective Colour」.

According to the most recent trichromatic theory, light upon entering the eye separates into 3 colours, red , green and blue. Recognition time of each colour differs. Blue and green are perceived at a faster rate than red. With the perception of the colour white the brain first recognizes the colours blue and green, then red finally sstabilizing on the full spectrum of colours perceived as white. When light is extinguished and everything turns dark, first the colours blue and green will appear followed by red, then by darkness. With black and white alternately spinning around, the brain is forced to create an optical illusion and colours appear.

A simple geometric design which creates subtle gradations of colour while spinning. A very popular top.

In the days of black and white television a Japanese educational program conducted a visual experiment. A disc of black and white designs was electrically spinning creating a subtle rainbow of hardly imperceptible colours. Did the audience catch the delicate colours? Not everyone it seems, but yes I caught them.

With delicacy and refined gestures, this top recalls a live movie. What a spectacular vision!

Subtle nuances of rainbow colours rise and float in the air. Gentle whisperings of love.

Primary colours become secondary colours, everything mixed and slightly off. Spin the top and monochromatic gradations seem to float above the secondary colours. In flourescent light the colours turn silver.

Some people say "I love this one"! The eye chases a pale enigmatic rainbow as it spins around and around. Just as the top is slowing to a stop the blue and white checkered pattern separates into a gentle rhythm reminiscent of ancient images of photo decomposition.

The Japanese character for "wind" is written into the design. A blue spiral becomes visible as the top spins.Whether spinning to the right or the left the patterns differ. Spinning slowly creates a gentle soft breeze, while a forceful spin creates a tornado.

This symbol of an international radioactive trefoil transformed into a rainbow prism motif. The spinning top spins out into an immense rainbow. Caution! Radiating Rainbow!

The Japanese character for "ocean" is written into the design. A green spiral becomes visible as the top spins. Whether spinning to the right or the left, the patterns differ. Spinning slowly creates a gentle eddy , while a forceful spin creates a wild whirlpool.

Patterns derived from daily phenomena emerge from a spiraling vortex. The carrot you sliced this morning, the intricate swirling colours of the little flower outside your window, these ordinary patterns might seem just "ordinary"to most people but they become something else if you let them. A world of galactic wonder spinning out a compositional structure of the universe, a mandala to the mind.

The feminine profile speaks out in segmented tones of grey, concentrations of darkness /brightness spiral out in a stratum of circular rings, a hierarchy of monochromatic dispersion. A simple yet intricately elegant vision.

Blue and red fade into subtle tones of violet. Exquisite haze of otherwordly beauty.
