Hina Dolls: a Brief Introduction

What is Hina Festival?

The Hina Matsuri is a traditional Japanese event where dolls are put on display every March 3 to wish for the healthy growth and happiness of girls. In Japan, if a girl is born, every family without fail buys a doll before the child's first experience of March 3. Then they put the doll on display to celebrate the festival every year.

A history of Hina Matsuri

Originally in Ancient China, there was a custom for warding off evil on the day when the seasons changed in early March. When this custom spread to Japan, it became divine work for the emperor, until it finally became a seasonal festival (the peach seasonal festival) in the Edo period on the 3rd of March. Later on, the custom of celebrating the festival by putting Hina Dolls on display spread.

Hina Festival Celebration

Hina Dolls are put on display starting from a fine day in early February. Putting it on display one day before is called "Ichiya Kazari" and is said to be ominous so do not do so. Enjoy looking at the beauty of the Hina Dolls until March 3 and then on the day of the Hina Matsuri, it is customary for the family to gather together and eat treats such as chirashizushi, clear broth soup with common orient clam, and sakuramochi.

What are Hina Dolls?

The roots of the Hina Dolls originally come from the Heian Period (around the year 1000) when children of the nobility would play house (called "Hina Asobi") using paper dolls. This was matched with seasonal events and is now put on display as a talisman taking on whatever disasters that may befall a girl. And because of its beauty, the ways of decorating it as the season's interior has increased.

Level 1Dairi-bina (Dairi-bina/Obina & Mebina )

Dairi refers to where the emperor lives. Obinas are also called odairi-binas and refer to the emperor, while mebinas are also known as obina-sama and refer to the empress. These two figures are always put on display.

Level 2Sannin-kanjo

Kanjo refers to the court ladies who serve in the court. In the middle is the chief court lady who holds a sake cup for sake. The left kanjo holds the "adding decanter"for topping up the sake. The kanjo at the right holds the "long handled decanter" for pouring the sake.

Level 3Gonin-bayashi

Known as the ohayashi, these are the males who perform traditional Japanese instruments. From the left are the taiko, the ookawa, the kozumi, the fue, and the utai.

Level 4Zuishin(Udaijin & Sadaijin )

The males who take on the role of guards in the court. On the left is the young Udaijin and the old man on the right is the Sadaijin.

Level 5Jicho

These are the people who do chores in the court, and are presented as being on their way out. There is the daigasa with the hat, the kutsudai for placing shoes on and the tachigasa which holds the umbrella.
