Rakuten Bank: Social Contributions

The mission of Internet-based Rakuten Bank is to contribute to the development of an economically and spiritually rich society through providing efficient settlement services. Guided by this mission, the bank honors its responsibilities as a business that is highly public in nature, and manages operations with the goal of realizing a sustainable society.

A part of this is active involvement in social contribution activities. Specifically, the bank utilizes its characteristics as an Internet bank--the fact that transactions can be conducted without any restrictions on time or place--to raise money for emergency disaster relief, which it has done since 2001.

In addition to the "Chokotto Iikoto Program," which allows customers to donate money when they use Rakuten Bank services, the bank has established special donation accounts primarily for charitable organizations in Japan and encourages customers to donate. Support is also provided for special donation projects run by an NGO, Plan Japan, which is involved in a variety of initiatives, including building elementary school buildings in Southeast Asia.

Emergency Disaster Aid

Thanks to our users’ enormous goodwill, a total of ¥146,490,616 has been raised (as of January 2009) for 23 emergency disaster aid projects. The money has been donated to help provide relief for disaster victims.

"Chokotto Iikoto Program"

In Japanese, chokotto iikoto means “a little bit of good,” and that is exactly what the Rakuten Bank "Chokotto Iikoto Program" does. Every time customers use a specific Rakuten Bank service, Rakuten Bank makes a donation of between one and ten yen to five selected charity organizations. Customers are not charged; the program is funded with donations from Rakuten Bank and other supporting companies. Since its launch in April 2005, the program has raised ¥21,678,157 (as of September 2013) thanks to the generous cooperation of our partners and customers.

Rakuten Bank School Support Project

Rakuten Bank has provided support for special donation projects run by Plan Japan, a non-governmental organization accredited by the United Nations. Money raised was used to build new elementary school buildings in the Dambe region of Cambodia in January 2006 and in Northern Samar province of the Philippines in January 2008. The schoolhouses provide an enriching environment where children can devote themselves to their studies.
