In April 2016, the region of Kumamoto on Kyushu Island, Japan, was struck by a series of strong earthquakes. The powerful tremors caused human losses and sever material damages.
The Rakuten Group offers its deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the earthquakes and would like to bring its support to the recovery efforts by taking the actions described below.

Relief efforts by Rakuten Group

Rakuten Group, as well as Hiroshi Mikitani, Chairman, President and CEO of Rakuten Inc., made monetary and relief good donations to the earthquake-affected areas.

  • 30 million yen


  • ・19.25 million yen monetary donation to Kumamoto Prefecture
  • ・9.63 million yen monetary donation to Oita Prefecture
  • ・1.12 million yen worth of relief goods※

The "Rakuten Clutch's Special Charity Fund" gathered online donations from customers.
Your contributions are to be accepted by Kumamoto prefecture and Oita prefecture. Thank you for your support.

Total amount:

  • 136,126,948 yen (donation period: April 15 - May 31, 2016)

"Rakuten Clutch's Special Charity Fund" is an online system accepting different donation methods, by bank transfer through Rakuten Bank, electronic money with "Rakuten Edy", by "Rakuten Super Point" transfer, and by credit card with "Rakuten Card".

On April 21, a truck full of goods provided for free-of-charge by Rakuten Ichiba merchants set off for Kumamoto from Rakuten Fulfillment Center.

Please not that no reward article will be sent to donors.

Assistance through everyday shopping! initiative

Rakuten Ichiba implemented the "Assistance through everyday shopping!" program (ended May 5). For each order placed by participating customers during the program, Rakuten Ichiba put 10 yen toward relief efforts for the affected areas. Thanks to the collaboration of 43,496 customers, 531,450 yen were gathered.

For customers in regions where the Disaster Relief Act is being applied, Rakuten Mobile implemented support measures that exempted its monthly fees for April.

For customers having an address on April 17th in the region of Kumamoto Prefecture under the Disaster Relief Act.

Rakuten Communications' initiatives

For customers in regions where the Disaster Relief Act is being applied, Rakuten Communications is implementing support measures that include reducing its monthly fees.

For customers having a billing address in the region under the Kumamoto Earthquake Disaster Relief Act.

Rakuten Bank's initiatives

For customers in regions where the Disaster Relief Act is being applied, Rakuten Bank is implementing support measures that include reissuing cash cards free of charge.

Rakuten Life Insurance's initiatives

For customers in regions where the Disaster Relief Act is being applied, Rakuten Life Insurance is implementing support measures that include extending the grace period for paying premiums. 

Rakuten Life Insurance donated 5 million yen to the affected areas.

Donation from the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles

The Rakuten Baseball, Inc. Players Association has donated one million yen, with a further one million yen from the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, manager Masataka Nashida and coaches, for a total donation of two million yen through the "Rakuten Clutch Special Charity Fund".

The fundraising activities conducted in April and May by the baseball team collected 4.5 million yen that were added to "Rakuten Clutch Special Charity Fund".

Donation from Vissel Kobe

The Vissel Kobe Players Association, along with the team manager, staff and club members have donated a total of 500,000 yen through the "Rakuten Clutch Special Charity Fund". 

Fundraising activities were carried out at home games, and a donation box was also set up at an official merchandise store.

Donation from Rakuten Recipe

During April 25. and May 31., for every recipe submission and review, Rakuten Recipe made a 10 yen donation to "Rakuten Clutch Special Charity Fund" for the victims of Kumamoto Earthquake.
Thanks to the users who submitted 29,094 posts, a total of 290,940 yen was donated.
