Rakuten, Inc. (“Rakuten,” Chairman and CEO: Hiroshi Mikitani, Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) will sponsor the “Tentou” (sky lantern) event for the repose of victims who had perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The event is organized by Japanese well-known designer, Kansai Yamamoto, and will be held on September 10th at Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture.

“Tentou” is a memorial event organized by Kansai Yamamoto. During the event, lanterns are lit and sent high into the air, and participants mourn for those who had perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck on March 11th together with the families, friends, and acquaintances of the victims. With the message “HEAD UP! LET’S GO!,” the event aims to send prayers and cries of encouragement not only to Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, which incurred serious damage in the earthquake, but also to disaster victims around the world, including Bali (Indonesia) which was affected by the Sumatra Earthquake, and Kiev (Ukraine), which was affected by radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident.

Videos of the event will be transmitted worldwide via the Internet and projected on large screens at each event venue.

In conjunction with the “Tentou” event and in cooperation with the “Sakura Project,” charity T-shirts designed by Kansai Yamamoto will be available for sale. The “Sakura Project” (*) is a reconstruction support group established by volunteers from Rakuten Ichiba stores. All profits from the sale of the T-shirts will be donated to Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture.
