Tohoku-Based Rakuten Ichiba Shops to Set-Up
Live Market at Odakyu Department Store in Shinjuku

Rakuten, Inc. (“Rakuten,” Chairman and CEO: Hiroshi Mikitani, Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) and Odakyu Department Store Co., Ltd. (“Odakyu Department Store,” President and Representative Director: Mikio Ogawa, Head Office: Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo) will hold the Rakuten Ichiba Tohoku Gourmet Support Market at the Shinjuku branch of Odakyu Department Store, with the goal of contributing to the economic revitalization of the Tohoku (Northeastern Japan) region, including the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The event will be held for six days beginning Thursday June 23 to Tuesday June 28, 2011.

About 20 shops based in the Tohoku region within Rakuten Ichiba, Japan’s largest Internet shopping mall will open real shops to sell local food and sweets from the Tohoku area at Rakuten Ichiba Tohoku Gourmet Support Market. The specific products to be sold will be determined by mid-June. Rakuten will also donate an amount equal to 1% of sales during the period of the event to victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Odakyu Department Store will support the exhibitors by discounting the usual exhibit conditions by 1%.

After the occurrence of the earthquake disaster, Rakuten quickly held an on-line Tohoku product exhibition, and has continued to do what little it can to assist the affected areas. This time, by connecting Tohoku shops to non-Internet using consumers and carrying out vibrant sales activities through Rakuten Ichiba Tohoku Gourmet Support Market, Rakuten hopes to promote the attractiveness of Tohoku to consumers and contribute to the economic recovery of Tohoku as a whole.

Meanwhile, Odakyu Department Store is working to assist affected areas through activities such as fairs that sell vegetables from the Tohoku and Northern Kanto regions, and donations of portions of sales amounts of original products.

With the holding of this event, we aim to support the overall economic revitalization of Tohoku by providing a place for shops selling mainly Tohoku area goods to sell directly to customers at a department store located directly above Japan’s largest terminal station Shinjuku, and helping spread information from the region.
